Things to do in Interlaken, SWITZERLAND
It’s not surprising that Interlaken is often referred to as the adventure capital of Switzerland. There are plenty of adventurous things to do in Interlaken - including canyoning, white water rafting and paragliding - but the less adventurous visitor won’t feel left out here either.
With its position at the heart of the Bernese Alps, and surrounded by crystal clear lakes, Interlaken is paradise in central Switzerland.
As the name suggests, Interlaken is situated on a narrow strip of land between two lakes, Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, both of which are fed by the River Aare.
Hit The Hiking Trails
The easiest, cheapest and arguably most rewarding activity in Interlaken are the beautiful scenic hiking trails. A plethora of trails allow hikers to choose trails based on length of time and fitness level required. Options range from spots like Panoramaweg, an easy two-hour circuit, to Pizol’s Five Lake four to five-hour circuit, which is purportedly one of the best in the region.

Interlaken contains everything from moonlight hikes to cogwheel-train-facilitated hikes (such as the from Wilderswil) or between stations treks, such as a downhill hike from Lauterbrunnen station to Stechelberg.
Paragliding
Nothing beats a beautiful birds eye view of the enchanting and formidable Swiss Alps, no matter the time of year. Admire snowcapped peaks or rolling hills of green dotted with idyllic village homes as you swiftly make your way down through the sky and into the landing site (which is often the beautiful field of Interlaken’s Hohematte park).

Visit the Highest Railway Station in Europe, Jungfraujoch
The awe-inspiring summits in the Jungfrau Region are home to the highest railway station in all of Europe, measuring at 3,454 meters above sea level.
The Jungfraujoch train winds around the towering Eiger and Mönch Mountains, snaking its way through Eismeer and Eigerwand stations, each with stupendous views of their own.
It overlooks dramatic landscapes from viewing platforms on the Aletsch Glacier or the Ice Palace. On a clear day, the station platform is said to have a view as far as Italy, Germany, and France. The region also holds a music festival in July and early August that features performers from all over the world.

Day Trip to Jungfrau
The construction of the Jungfrau railway in the early 20th century, which connects Kleine Scheidegg to the Jungfraujoch, the saddle between the Mönch and the Jungfrau, made the area one of the most-visited places in the Alps. Along with the Aletsch Glacier to the south, the Jungfrau is part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch area, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 2001.
Firstly make sure you head to the open air viewing platform to get the best view of the glacier and craggy peaks. You can also visit the Ice Palace, walk out on the snow or go sledging and skiing if you have more time to spare.
The journey to Jungraujoch can be done independently, or you can book a guided tour. Take a Cruise on Lake Thun & Lake Brienz
Interlaken is home to two of the finest lakes in Switzerland. And what better way to enjoy them than with a cruise on one or both of them. A cruise through the crystal clear glacier waters of Lake Thun or Lake Brienz takes you past picturesque fishing villages and castles steeped in history. Towering mountains surround the lake making for some of the most jaw dropping scenery.
Wander the Town Centre
There are two sides to Interlaken’s town centre, the main street and the streets north of the main street leading to the river.
The Main street is strictly shopping and mostly for tourists. I wouldn’t skip past it too quickly but you don’t need to spend too much time here. If you’re looking to buy some Swiss chocolate, Swiss Army Knives or souvenir type items then this is where to go.
After you’ve finished with your shopping, head north through the small collection of streets that lead to the river. Here you will find more traditional buildings decorated with baskets of flowers and colourful window shutters.
When you get to the bridge crossing the river, enjoy the view of the turquoise glacier waters moving rapidly towards the lake.
